In this season of merriment, it’s worth remembering that Advent and Christmas seasons aren’t celebratory for everyone. Many Canadians experience anxiety, depression, & seasonal affective disorder at this time of year. The cold weather, lack of daylight, and emphasis on joy can have adverse effects on mental health and take additional effort to look after one’s self. Perhaps this is your first holiday season after the death of a loved one. Whether your loss happened in the last twelve months, or years ago, the absence of the loved one is emphasized in large and little ways. Grief can come up at anytime. These are normal and natural responses to the absence of loved ones, and there are many ways to find support. Talking with trusted friends/family, minister/spiritual advisor, or seeking out group supports or individual counselling can all be helpful.
