Last year, a new garden was opened on the Alberta Legislature Grounds, a tribute to truth and reconciliation in this province. The name of the reconciliation garden is Kihciy Maskikiy/Aakaakmotaani. These are Cree and Blackfoot words, respectively, that mean ‘sacred medicine/save many people.’ Indigenous Elders named this garden and guided its design. Within the garden is a monument to honour the victims and survivors of Canada’s residential school system, titled 'Mother Earth Circling: Healing from the residential school experience.’ To learn more, please visit these gardens in person, or visit online at www.alberta.ca/reconciliation-garden-and-residential-school-monument.
